A Strategy for Responsible Development and Use

The European Commission’s Communication on AI (AI@EC) represents a crucial step in the formalization of its strategic vision. It aims to promote the internal development and use of legal, safe and trustworthy AI, in harmony with European values.

Guiding Principles

Establishment of Operational Guidelines: The objective is to provide Commission staff with clear guidance for the implementation of AI systems. These guidelines will cover the use, development and acquisition of AI systems

Assessment and Classification of AI Systems: A risk-based approach will be adopted to assess and classify AI systems used or considered by the Commission. This approach will be based on the Commission’s operational directives.

Refusal of AI Systems Incompatible with European Values: The Commission undertakes not to use AI systems deemed incompatible with European values, or representing a threat to the security, health and fundamental rights of individuals .

Establishment of Organizational Structures: Organizational structures will be established to ensure compliance with the Commission’s AI obligations, taking into account EU legislative and policy initiatives as well as existing non-discrimination legislation , accessibility, information security and data protection.

Put into Practice: Staff Training and Awareness

  1. Training and Awareness: Particular emphasis will be placed on training and awareness of Commission staff, providing them with relevant information on AI, as well as advice and support through training and guidelines.

  2. Focus on People: The Commission will maintain its human-centered approach, ensuring that staff have access to essential information on AI.

  3. Preparing for the AI Act: With the Communication on AI@EC, the Commission is preparing for the implementation of the AI Act and putting in place the necessary mechanisms for its safe and ethical use of AI in his work.

A Commitment to Compliant and Advanced AI

Director General of Digital Services, Veronica Gaffey, highlights the opportunity that AI represents for Commission staff, in terms of efficiency and modernization of systems. This Communication is an important step to ensure that the Commission is ready to implement the AI Act and establish the necessary mechanisms for the safe and ethical use of AI in its own activities.
